1MDB offers academic awards to Chinese Independent Secondary School students
The second batch of UEC top scorers received RM2.25 million from Yayasan 1MDB on 27 August 2011. This is the second year of Yayasan 1MDB’s nurturing talent programme in partnership with Dong Jiao Zong (Dong Zong, United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia and Jiao Zong, United Chinese School Teachers Association) and Huaren Education Foundation (Huaren). Yayasan 1MDB, the CSR arm of 1MDB, funded the grant while Dong Jiao Zong and Huaren selected the students based on merit.
The students had excelled in their UEC Examination in 2010. Each recipient will receive RM15,000 annually for the next three years. An initial total amount of RM750,000 was presented to the 50 students for their first-year university expenses in a simple ceremony in Kuala Lumpur. They also received an award letter each, signed by YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak in his capacity as Chairman of 1MDB Foundation, which provides the funding.
The first batch of 50 students received their grant August last year to help them prepare for tertiary studies.
