1MDB rewards STPM and SPM achievers
In partnership with the Ministry of Education and Public Services Depart, 1MDB committed over RM16 million in education aid in two separate programmes to deserving students who did well in the 2009 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM).
The 1MDB Financial Assistance to SPM students and 1MDB Academic Grant to STPM students, the first of its kind offered in Malaysia, were presented by Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak as part of 1MDB’s CSR initiative aimed at strengthening the nation’s human capacity by creating opportunities for young talent to explore their full potential.
The 1MDB SPM Financial Assistance is meant for students who scored between 10As and 15As in the 2009 SPM examination as a reward for their hard work and in line with YAB Prime Minister’s call to amplify the “People First Performance Now” concept. These deserving students have produced excellent results but may require additional financial resources to pursue their education as they come from lower income families.
It is done in collaboration with the Public Services Department (PSD), the agency responsible for selecting the students using a matrix of various criteria in a fair selection process. Each of the 300 students selected will receive between RM7,500 to RM15,000 annually for the duration of their studies, depending on the type of institution and course chosen.
The 1MDB STPM Academic Grant, meanwhile, is a collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE). The students, chosen by MOE, represent the best 30 candidates in the 2009 STPM examinations who obtained A1s in all five subjects taken. The students will receive between RM15,000 to RM20,000 annually for the duration of their studies, depending on the course chosen.
1MDB provides the funding for both programmes, which will cover the duration of each student’s first degree or diploma, subject to their academic progress and conditions stipulated by the respective administration agencies (PSD and MOE).
