Help for children of policemen

SHAH ALAM, 30 April 2012: Three organisations are working together to help enhance the learning skills and capabilities of policemen’s children.
Yayasan 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad) and Yayasan Pengaman Malaysia (Pengaman) are collaborating with Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) to develop a structured learning module for students aged between 13 and 17 years, who are children of policemen and retired policemen.
The programme, called Dekad Kecemerlangan Anak-Anak Polis (DAKAP), will utilise UPSI’s own “Prodigy” modules incorporating, among others, learning skills, motivational courses, team-building, career guidance, creative thinking skills and leadership courses.
The pilot programme involving 600 students will start in May, during the school holidays.
Pengaman will coordinate the programme as well as identify the participants, with UPSI providing expert trainers. Yayasan 1MDB provides the RM1 million fund needed to start up DAKAP.
Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, who is also Chairman of Yayasan 1MDB Board of Trustee, announced the foundation’s contribution to Pengaman on 23 October 2011.
Pengaman Chairman Tan Sri Samsuri Arshad said: “We intend for DAKAP to be an integrated programme for both children and parents, where emphasis is given on balancing the dynamics of the children’s development through education, social skills, self-motivation and spiritual growth.”
He added: “Following the pilot programme in May, we will carry out a study to identify more students who will benefit from the DAKAP programme. We hope that upon completion of DAKAP, each student will be able to develop their newly learnt skills to better themselves in school.”
1MDB Corporate Social Responsibility Executive Director, Hizwani Hassan said: “We believe that education is an inclusive tool towards a brighter future and this partnership with Pengaman is one of our ways to improve access to education. We have initiated and collaborated with various organizations on a range of diverse education based CSR initiatives that encompasses the 1Malaysia spirit. This is another education initiative to add to that diversity.”
He added: “We are proud to be a part of the DAKAP initiative. We are happy to be able to contribute to the welfare of the children of the people who have served us selflessly for over 200 years. The students will be exposed to the kind of learning experience that would have otherwise only been available at a steep fee.”
Yayasan 1MDB Board of Trustee Member Tan Sri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin, presented the cheque to Tan Sri Samsuri in a ceremony at Pengaman’s headquarters here. Also present was Deputy Inspector-General of Police Dato Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to witness the ceremony.
