The competition, organised by the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) on behalf of 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad), started on 15 October 2011 and attracted 35 top local and international urban planners and architects.
MIP President Prof Dato’ Dr. Alias Abdullah said: “In Stage Two, participants really stepped up their game and gave us top notch submissions. After much deliberation, the jury panel decided on a shortlist of six finalists instead of five as originally planned. This is due to the varied and interesting ideas that were developed.”
He added: “The extended deliberation has resulted in a slight delay in the competition schedule, but the extra time is worth it as we want to ensure only the best talents get to design Bandar Malaysia.”
Stage Three kicked off on 15 May 2012, and submissions of the concept master plan will be due on 13 July 2012. MIP is expected to announce the winner in late August.
The jury panel for Stage Three will comprise representatives from MIP, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Malaysian Institute of Architects, Institute of Engineers Malaysia, Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia and Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia as well as renowned international experts in urban planning and design.
1MDB Real Estate Sdn Bhd (1MDB RE) Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Azmar Talib said: “The shortlisted finalists have proven that they’re passionate about designing Bandar Malaysia, a sustainable and liveable city that will set the benchmark in the region.”
He added: “We look forward to seeing concept master plan proposals that are cutting edge, and will define the desired and optimum standard of city-living, custom fit for Malaysians from all walks of life to live, work, play and learn.”
The 196-hectare Bandar Malaysia project will see the rejuvenation and regeneration of the old Sungai Besi airport into a new and vibrant landmark reflecting the Greater Kuala Lumpur aspiration.
It will be significant in transforming Kuala Lumpur as a top global city.
The mixed development, with a clear focus on culture and the arts, will be an international destination for cultural facilities and public venues, a range of commercial and lifestyle offers and exemplary residential areas.
