The need for a proper, sustainable waste management system at the Lahad Datu market is critical. Situated at the polluted river mouth, the water is clogged with anything from chicken parts and rotting produce to floating Styrofoam ice box. Led by Vincent Wong, a group of youths got together to tackle the problem head on, creating a sustainable circle of activities that include river cleaning, waste management, and composting campaign.

When we talk about recycling, one almost always imagines re-using bottles and collecting tin cans. But have you ever thought that the oil you just fried your food in might fuel a school bus? 23 year-old Vinesh and his team are collecting used cooking oil from school canteens and F&B outlets to be converted into Biodiesel. They plan to create an infrastructure for students in schools to trade used cooking oil from homes, indirectly reducing environmental degradation.

There are an estimated 200,000 students with hearing impairment in Malaysia. One of the biggest challenges for their families is to ensure the world at large is accessible and inclusive for these students. Through his experience, Mursyidi, a Graphic Arts teacher from Penang, recognizes how  tough this task is, and has over the years develop a tool to help teachers and parents connect more efficiently with students with impaired hearing.

Kelab Skuba UTM led by Adil Mohd has been actively doing their part in promoting the conservation of Malaysia’s marine ecosystem. This group of student and faculty enthusiasts has conducted a string of activities, including putting up hydro cheese, a type of porous wave breaker, to preserve the eco-system in Sibu Island, organizing beach cleaning activities and running coral nurseries in Perhentian and Redang Islands. The club, also a certified scuba diving school, is now intently looking to rehabilitate corals and the fish habitat of Pulau Sibu in Johore.

Lien Yu, an academic blogger with a keen following, is now expanding into games. From providing exam tips, work book exercise and exam papers on his blogs, he is now crafting an aps-based game for SPM and STPM candidates as a different way to revision.

Reaching out to the youth of Malaysia is possible despite being away. Projek Kalsom 17 is a perfect example of that. A group of Malaysian undergraduates from the United Kingdom has been running this project during their summer holidays in Malaysia since 1994. Projek Kalsom 17 elevates the potentials of secondary school students with excellent exam scores. The project focuses on strengthening soft skills among 200 aspiring 16-year olds.
